World Bank Poverty Findings and the APL Ghana Wellbeing Tracker: Converging Evidence on Ghana’s Household Economy

Executive Summary

Recent findings from the World Bank and the Africa Policy Lens (APL) Ghana Wellbeing Tracker point to a common conclusion: Ghana’s improving macroeconomic performance has not yet translated into broad-based improvements in household welfare. At the launch of the World Bank Group’s 10th Ghana Economic Update in August 2026, the Bank reported that 56.4% of Ghanaians remain in poverty and warned that spatial disparities are widening. The World Bank further observed that Ghana’s recent growth has been concentrated in sectors with relatively limited capacity to absorb labour, creating a disconnect between headline economic growth and the lived realities of much of the population.
